Hundreds of bikes per year are thrown into the canals, too---there are some nice photos of dredges bringing up dozens of bikes.

Bike theft is extremely common in Amsterdam. You might think that for this reason, people would buy and use really good locks for their bikes, but though some people do, that isn't the main approach: most people have really crappy bikes and really crappy locks. When their bike gets stolen, they go to the flea market and buy another (stolen) crappy bike.
