   I usually identify them by their call. Once they stop vocalizing, it gets pretty difficult. I haven’t mastered that yet myself.

   John, the Sibley guide gives some info about flycatcher calls: such-and-such a kind does a dry “whit”, this other type does a high-pitched tee-tee-tee, or whatever. I actually did spend some time reading these and trying to match them to what I was hearing. But it’s hard to write a description of a sound, and actually convey the sound…or, rather, it’s hard for me to read a description of the sound, and compare it to a sound that I’m hearing. But thanks for the advice, I’ll pay less attention to the visuals next time and more to the sound, and see if that lets me make a definitive ID.

   I have this species, if it is indeed the same, in a huge cactus in my yard most of the year. The males are an almost red peach color and gray. The red extends to the head in most cases. They are beautiful birds and make beautiful sounds. Right now is their matiing season.
